7 Moai at Playa Anakena

2003-12-02

This Ahu has five of the best preserved Moai that I saw on Easter Island.  And four of them have the pukao (topknot) attached.

These Moai are above the beach at Playa Anakena, one of the only two sand beaches on Rapa Nui.  I climbed the hill that you see behind the Moai, which was a nasty hike.  The hill is completely made of volcanic scree (loose rocks) with scrub vegetation on top.  For someone my size, carrying cameras, it's slippery, treacherous and you don't want to fall or plant a knee, unless you like cuts and abrasions.  But it was worth it as the view form the top is good.
