Back to the Easter Island Gallery 1 page Easter Island, Chile 2003 Volcan Rano Kao 2003-12-01 This is a multiple picture "pamoramic" view of Volcan Rano Kao, one of the two important volcanos on Easter Island (there are 4 in total). On the far side of the right wall, before the opening (center back wall of this picture) lies the Birdman village, and the stone houses. Tradition says the birdman competition was started and finished on the volcano wall on the right side. As you can see, the volcano has been dormant for thousands of years, and a freshwater lake has formed in the crater. I think hey said the lake is 5-7 metres deep. There is a fertile plant community growing in the lake. Technically, this is seven photos "stitched" together into one, using the Canon photostitch tool in Zoom Browser. |
