Dave at Ahu Tahiri

2003-12-01

I'm standing by the Moai head (the body is buried beneath my sandaled feet) at Ahu Tahiri.  This Moai isn't very large, and I don''t remember if it's topknot was lying around somewhere.  If you look at the head, it isn't very complete, and  actually think it was unfinished.

If you look closely, I have a bone fishhook necklace around my neck.  These were sacred to the Rapa Nui people, since fishing was very important to the continued survival of the island.  The man who sold it to me in Hangaroa assured me that his Grandfather had carved that fishhook!  That is one of the few trinkets that I brought back from the island.
